Vattanac Golf Resort, East Course
When designing the East and West Courses at Cambodia’s Vattanac Golf Resort, Sir Nick Faldo faced cultural constraints rather than natural ones. Both courses are thoughtfully integrated with "famous cultural expressions," including statues and scale models of historical Cambodian landmarks.
Located about twelve miles from Phnom Penh, the par-72 East Course stretches just over 7,400 yards. Like the West Course, it features resilient paspalum grass and utilizes flat terrain enhanced by significant mounding and landscaping.
The East Course is characterized by angular ponds and grass bunkers, adding a unique charm but also making the layout more restrictive than it appears. The course features extensive sand hazards, including extravagant bunkers and waste areas that narrow many holes. Strategic play is essential, particularly on the 550-yard 13th hole, where numerous traps guard the green.
Despite its challenges, the East Course offers picturesque moments, such as the 193-yard 12th hole, framed by trees and a lake. Additionally, the elegant red-roofed pavilion, used for conferences and floating on the lake near the 18th hole, provides a distinctive and scenic backdrop.
