Gunung Geulis Country Club, about 45 minutes from Jakarta, is a serene 36-hole golf complex nestled in a 450-hectare mountain setting. The resort, situated 450 meters above sea level, offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the Cikeas River.
The East Course, opened in 1994 and designed by Thomson, Wolveridge, and Perret, is a challenging test, especially due to its hilly terrain. Known for its undulating fairways, the front nine, called the Valley Course, features breathtaking views and a nearly British Links-style layout. The 8th hole is a risk-reward par 5 with a lake and pot bunkers, while the 9th is a demanding par 3 played from an elevated tee.
The back nine, or Hill Course, offers more forgiving fairways but presents tricky lies due to its undulating terrain. The 16th hole, a par 3, is particularly challenging, requiring an accurate shot to a well-protected green.
The clubhouse, designed by Kym Hughes, features a distinctive circular blue roof. While the resort primarily caters to locals seeking a weekend retreat from Jakarta, both courses are well worth a visit. They are more suited to experienced golfers due to the elevation changes and challenging lies, but all golfers will appreciate the well-maintained greens and fairways, and the excellent service provided.
