Sembawang Country Club
Sembawang Country Club, established by British Marines in 1967, has grown into a well-regarded golf destination in Singapore. Originally a nine-hole course, it expanded to 18 holes in 1977, with ongoing developments culminating in a new course and facilities in 2013. Located 20 kilometers north of Singapore’s center, the course stretches just under 6,500 yards and plays to a par-72. The layout is characterized by lush woodlands, hilly terrain, and tight fairways lined with jungle, where monkeys are often seen.
Known as the "commando course" due to its military origins, Sembawang Country Club offers a challenging round that requires a buggy to navigate its undulating landscape. Water hazards are a frequent challenge, starting right from the first tee where water flanks both sides of the fairway. The front nine provides a solid test of skill, but the back nine offers the most memorable holes, especially the 11th and 12th. The 11th hole, a par-4, features a pond that hugs the left side of the fairway and edges up to the green. The 12th, another par-4, demands a tee shot over water followed by an uphill approach to a well-protected green.
The 16th hole, a challenging par-5 with a blind fairway and water near the green, also stands out. Off the course, Sembawang offers a driving range, pro shop, lounge, gym, and play areas for children, making it a great destination for families. Well-maintained and steeped in history, Sembawang Country Club is a must-play for golfers visiting Singapore.
