Ballyshear Golf Links, located just east of Bangkok, offers a unique golfing experience that transports players into a world of historic course designs. Created by renowned architect Gil Hanse, Ballyshear is a tribute to the legendary Lido Golf Club, a now-closed American course designed by C.B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor, famous for incorporating iconic golf holes from around the world.
At Ballyshear, Hanse has replicated these classic designs, such as North Berwick’s Redan hole at the 16th, featuring a sloped green that challenges every tee shot, and St. Andrews’ Eden Hole at the 3rd, known for its strategic bunkers. The 8th hole showcases the Biarritz-style green with a deep gully, reminiscent of the original in France, while the Alps layout, inspired by Prestwick’s 17th, offers a blind approach shot at the 10th. The 4th hole, a 606-yard par-5, presents a particularly daunting challenge with two fairways surrounded by water and sand. Players must choose between a safer, longer route or a riskier shot to a smaller fairway that shortens the hole.
Ballyshear's design is a bold departure from typical Thai courses, with angular greens, expansive bunkers, and a distinct "throwback" aesthetic. Despite the vintage course design, the clubhouse is modern and understated, with plans for a hotel and advanced practice facilities to enhance the golfing experience.
